Airbnb got rid of Product Management Function ❌ => Airbnb is integrating PM with marketing ✅ AI like ChatGPT is taking over most of the work from Product Managers ❌ => ChatGPT is taking away redundant work from PMs ✅ Should you be worried about these developments as a Product Manager? Yes. You should. But only if you are in the following categories: 🤷🏽 You think your job is to just coordinate with Tech/Design and communicate timelines to everyone. 🧠 You think your job is to just create the strategy and every grain in your company will come hand-folded to execute your strategy. With no regard for adoption, user insights, growth, revenue, and business outcomes, most product managers end up making their teams feature factories. Your only job as a PM is to make the organization and users successful. Your job is value creation and not just feature creation. So if your only job is to create documents, and run behind your teams, you should definitely be worried about your job. For others who think of product management as a critical business function, you are going to become more important than ever. Tips for aspiring PMs: 1. Do not chase titles. 2. Understand PM from all aspects: Growth, Analytics, Strategy, Execution, Domain & Research. 3. Create some proof of work. We need more hands-on people here. Thoughts?🙏🏼 P.S. I am building HelloPM, a place where PMs thrive, check out if you are looking for a practical product management learning: https://hellopm.co [Edited the post to reflect the intent of the message ] #productmanagement #airbnb

Ankit Shukla Airbnb didn't rid of Product Management Function ❗️... I think this is a completely wrong message to spread. Even before Airbnb merged their PM function with Product Marketing function, PMs were expected to have understanding of Market, User problems, outward PoV, how to position/market a feature, how to communicate/target features for users etc... There is nothing new at all. Yesterday i wrote a post exactly on this. https://www.linkedin.com/posts/nitinkumariitd_product-management-product-marketing-role-activity-7078978487297974272-E6UM/

1. They didn’t remove the product management function. They merged it with product marketing because they’re deeply integrated functions at Airbnb. 2. The rise of AI did not lead to this transition alone. If I’m unaware of what happened, happy to read official sources.

Your cause and effect in the post doesn't correlate. Also your tips have nothing to do with the root cause you yourself mentioned. I think you should post a post on how to post.

Ankit Shukla you said, not to run after titles. Do you mean, as long as the work is related to Product management it doesn’t matter if the title is Product management or not?

1. If product managers are sent to marketing then who is doing the work what product managers used to do? Chat GPT is conversational AI but it's not robot which will do everything by it self.so are developers/ QA are doing work of PM using chat gpt ? 2. Don't chase behind title, no one actually wants to but company HRs and JDs want it so people chase behind the title.Noone will believe you resume if you don't have the title. Example : you have written as " Founder of ___" so title is important. Without title how you are going to define yourself. 3. Growth, analytics, execution, domain and research these all things can be done by Chat GPT , so even if a product manager learns about it how it will save a PM' s job. 4. Why project management is included ? If you will mix project management with product management then how the person who is playing both the role will decide , which one to focus because project management focus of cost and time and other one is innovation and quality and perfection, so I feel will project management will shadow the product management .it has to be separated

I agree with the points you've made. Product managers should be concerned if their role is limited to coordination and documentation without considering user insights and business outcomes. However, for those who understand the broader scope of product management and focus on value creation, these developments can provide opportunities to become even more important in driving organizational success. Aspiring PMs should aim to have a well-rounded understanding of various aspects and be hands-on in their work to make a meaningful impact.

I recently saw a app on product hunt that does exactly the same in secs … but AI can only provide you ideas , PM’s are the ones who execute these ideas …
